How to choose a conductor's baton for a wind band

This page is for teachers, students, and parents who want to reconsider their conductor's baton selection, as activities for the brass band competition begin in earnest from May onwards.

One conductor said, "There are a lot of people using batons that don't suit their physique."

Using a conductor's baton that doesn't fit your physique is like wearing a suit that doesn't fit.

Even if it's not immediately obvious, there are definite differences in ease of use, clarity of transmission, and reduced fatigue.

Are you making your selections like this?

The conductor's baton is often a tool that is chosen somewhat haphazardly.

People often choose pens without giving much thought to their length or weight, or they simply pick what everyone else is using, or they continue to use the same pen they've had for years.

However, a baton that doesn't suit your physique, hand size, or conducting style can be more difficult to handle than you might think.

For example, have you ever experienced something like this?

  • It doesn't feel right when I swing it.
  • It's difficult to stop it in the desired position.
  • It's difficult to convey the rhythm and nuances.
  • Swinging it for a long time puts a strain on your hands and arms.

That feeling of discomfort might not be due to a lack of practice, but rather to incompatibility with the equipment.

The conductor's baton is a tool that becomes an extension of the body.

A conductor's baton isn't something you can simply hold; it's not enough to just hold it.

Using a rod that suits your body will make your movements more natural and your intentions easier to convey.

In wind band music in particular, clarity of the conductor's instructions is crucial during daily rehearsals and practice sessions leading up to performances.

That's why it's important to be mindful of choosing a conductor's baton carefully, rather than treating it as "just any tool."
